Peterborough's Serpentine Green plans £45m upgrade

Published
Jun 8, 2017

Serpentine Green, the 19-year-old shopping centre in Hampton, Peterborough, England, could be in line for a £45m upgrade spend that would create almost 300 jobs.

British Land

Owner British Land wants to make the space fit for the third decade of the 21st century after already spending £7m on a revamp of its northern entrance last year. The mall currently hosts more than 5.5m visitors a year and British Land said the catchment area around it includes an increasing number of young families.

The investment will mean the addition of new retail units but also new leisure-focused attractions that should help tempt shoppers away from their screens and into the mall.

That means almost 12,000 square metres of leisure space, nearly 2,000 square metres of restaurants and cafes and a brand new ‘town square’ that can host outdoor events. Ideas at the moment include a gym, bowling centre, VR experience and children’s play area. But no concrete plans have been made with a public consultation period this month to ask local residents want they would like to see.

As for the retail space upgrade. This would include the demolition of the southern mall and the Rotunda, which is currently under-used, and the creation of an equivalent amount of new retail units. The main mall will also be refurbished.

A planning application should be ready by the autumn with work to go ahead next year if the plans are approved. Approval seems likely given that the local council has responded positively to the news of the new social and community space and the increased jobs in the area.

Tenants at the moment include H&M, River island, Next, New Look, Clarks, Claire’s, Boots, Mothercare and Outfit.
