Off-kilter asymmetry and sparkle at Dries Van Noten and Guy Laroche

New twists on the trench coat and twinkling, iridescent, festive fall fashion... On Tuesday, the two luxury labels which unveiled their latest collections in Paris had more than one thing in common. 

Dries Van Noten's nonchalant chic collection was the epitome of grounded, no gimmicks glamour. Directional styling included asymmetrical peplum skirts, knitwear dripping with huge sequins, trains that doubled up as capes and pockets for eveningwear.

The Belgian print maestro sampled hand-crafted Bloomsbury batik, fragmented motifs and appliqué flock. Prints in a delightful ochre, bordeaux and navy-heavy palette were paired with camel pieces to sensational effect.

Adam Andrascik's maiden collection for Guy Laroche offered a dark, romanticized vision for fall.

While staying relatively true to the French fashion house's boy-meets-girl grammar, the runway teemed with bold, sexy elements, such as plunging v-necks and oval cutouts, reminiscent of some of Guy Laroche's 70s pieces. 

Silhouettes incorporated the new head designer's signature take on deconstruction. Everything from trench coats, buckle-belted biker jackets to trousers featured off-kilter proportions and mix and match paneling.

Gold and silver-coated long ribbed-knit dresses were among the runway highlights.

With a focus on texture, tattooed leather, second-skin calligraphic print trouser suits, dévoré brocade skirts and scintillating figure-hugging lurex-shot knits added a welcome touch of luxe. The denim revival continued at Guy Laroche with tailored sequin-embellished jeans and spliced denim skirts.

This season, the label drew inspiration from Peter Greenaway's film "Pillow Book" (1996), a sensual drama set in Japan, that revolves around a calligrapher's daughter.
