French Fashion Institute appoints Xavier Romatet as general manager

There are major changes on the horizon at the French Fashion Institute (Institut Français de la Mode, IFM). Dominique Jacomet, who has been in charge of IFM for 12 years, has been busy in the last few months, notably working on the institute’s fashion academy that is set to open in September. In the meantime, the IFM's board, chaired by André Beirnaert, has picked a new boss to eventually take over from Jacomet.

Xavier Romatet, the former CEO of Condé Nast France, who left the publishing group a year ago, was selected as IFM's next general manager, and will start in his new role on August 26.

“I’m delighted to continue with the work carried out by this very fine institution, which I will be proud to make into the world’s number one. As a mission, it's both exciting and stimulating,” said Romatet in a press release.

The future man in charge of the French Fashion Institute, which since January 2019 controls both the Parisian couture’s union chamber and IFM, has a remarkable marketing experience. He founded the Directing advertising agency, and was later general manager and joint president of DDB France. In 2006, he joined Condé Nast France (the publisher of Vogue, Glamour, GQ, AD and Vanity Fair) and became its CEO. From 2016 to 2018, he was also vice-president of Condé Nast International.

“Xavier Romatet knows very well both the world of fashion and luxury and that of academia. As the leader of a major media group, whose business he managed to expand in the last 12 years, he demonstrated remarkable entrepreneurial abilities and established an exceptional international network,” said Ralph Toledano, president of the French Fashion and Haute Couture Federation.

“He is a man of culture who knows how to listen and understand our times, identifying and promoting the talents who will shape the industry in the future. On top of all this, he is a man of great integrity, with strong convictions and a firm commitment to ethics."

Romatet will take over as president of IFM from Dominique Jacomet, who will become an adviser to the chairman of the institute's board.

“I very warmly congratulate Dominique Jacomet and Sylvie Ebel for their first-rate teamwork, which enabled IFM to rise to the forefront among the world’s fashion academies,” said André Beirnaert. “The objective is to make the [IFM] the international benchmark in terms of fashion design, management and know-how,” he added.

To continue in this direction, Romatet will be able to rely on the unrivalled expertise of the IFM’s deputy general manager, Sylvie Ebel.
