Fisher and Forsyth head US Open qualifying

LONDON (Reuters) - Ross Fisher and Alastair Forsyth headed the 36-hole qualification for next week's U.S. Open at Walton Heath, England, on Monday.

Englishman Fisher (67-70) and Scot Forsyth (69-68) totalled seven-under-par 137 over Walton Heath's Old and New courses to head the field by a stroke.

Three more Englishmen, Ross McGowan, Phillip Archer and Robert Dinwiddie, took joint third place. French Ryder Cup player Thomas Levet and Sweden's Johan Edfors were a further stroke back and went through after extra holes.

Levet, who lost out in sudden-death to Ernie Els for the 2002 British Open title, and Edfors overcame 48-year-old amateur Gary Wolstenholme and Argentina's Daniel Vancsik in a playoff after the quartet all finished five-under.

Of the seven who qualified from a field of 42, Dinwiddie achieved his place at Torrey Pines, San Diego, next week in the most dramatic fashion.

The player, who set the course record 63 at Wentworth two weeks ago in the PGA Championship, birdied six of his last eight holes to qualify with a stroke in hand.
