Dutch retailer Hema to cut jobs at headquarters

Dutch retailer Hema has plans to cut jobs at its Amsterdam-based headquarters.

The reason for the reorganization would be that the retailer wants to work more efficiently and save costs.

The cuts will affect a total of 56 jobs, 36 headquarters employees and 20 of Hema’s current vacancies. The 36 headquarters employees include 19 people with a permanent contract and 17 employees with a temporary contract, reports RTL Z based on internal documents.

In addition, RTL Z reports that the cuts will largely affect Hema’s supporting offices at the headquarters as well as other departments. At the moment, there are about 700 jobs at the support office of which 8% will be dismissed.

In November 2018, Dutch media reported that four of the then-eight sitting executives at Hema would be leaving the Dutch retailer within the next nine months. The news came just a few weeks following the acquisition of the retailer by Dutch entrepreneur Marcel Boekhoorn. At the time, Hema said that “it choose to cut the management board to simplify the structure of the company in order to operate more effectively and that the company would be able to further develop and implement its growth strategy more quickly, faster and in a simpler way.”

Hema currently operates more than 750 stores in nine countries and two continents and employs more than 19,000 people.
