Desigual celebrates the first edition of its Innovation Day

The Spanish company takes a step forward in terms of sustainability and innovation. Desigual held its first Innovation Day: a daylong seminar dedicated to learning about the latest digital trends in sustainability and consumer experience in the fashion industry, one of the brand’s core pillars. This technological project comes in addition to its Awesome Lab startup accelerator which launched in October 2021.

The Barcelona-based brand celebrates the first day of its seminar dedicated to sustainability and innovation - Desigual

Organized in collaboration with the open innovation platform, Plug and Play, this initiative targeted the firm's teams and included lectures given by the digital fashion retailer DressX and the cloud computing service Amazon Web Services. It also presented two panels conducted by start-ups that focused on the metaverse, and a workshop on "design thinking". The start-ups that participated in this session were Vestico, Syrup Tech, Swearit, Personify XP, Resortecs, Exonode and SXD.

A panel discussion on sustainability was held in the afternoon with the participation of leaders from emerging companies such as Patricia Fernández (CMO of Bcome), Mónica Rodríguez (CEO and co-founder of Recovo), and Mercedes García (co-founder of Ecodicta). Topics such as the impact of sustainability in the fashion world, the visibility of this type of production and the prices of sustainable garments were addressed.

Finally, a last discussion centered around the metaverse was held with Riccardo Zanini (co-founder of The Nemesis), Melissa Mcdermott (director of development Bluebite), and Cai Felip (CEO of Union Linking Realities). The main objective of the event was to emphasize that all fashion brands must start to be present on virtual platforms in order to engage with their customers.

"We are constructing an Open Desigual and we want to make collaborations our competitive advantage and  differentiating element. Through initiatives like this seminar and all the work we are developing with the Awesome Lab startups, we contribute to a change of mentality internally that allows us to continue to be disruptive and include more technology and innovation in the fashion industry," said Javier Fernandez, head of digital innovation at Desigual.

This is not the fashion company's first project related to innovation. In addition to its aforementioned Awesome Lab, Desigual develops other technological projects throughout the year such as the Breakfastech, virtual sessions aimed at explaining the company's digital developments.

In regards to fashion, some of the brand's latest projects include its latest collaboration with Johnson Hartig, founder of Libertine, or its Mickey Mouse capsule collection made in partnership with designer Christian Lacroix.

Founded in 1984 by Thomas Meyer, the Barcelona-based company has more than 2,700 employees in more than 100 countries through 10 sales channels, 415 mono-brand stores and six product categories: Woman, Man, Kids, Accessories, Shoes and Sport. In its 2020 financial year, Desigual’s turnover decreased by 38.8% to 360 million euros.
