British police close 1,219 sale sites

Published
Dec 7, 2009

British authorities have closed over a thousand websites selling goods illegally that were being controlled by Asian gangs.

These sites offered goods at bargain prices, including jewellery from Tiffany & Co and Links of London, Australian brand Ugg boots as well as sought after GHD hair straighteners. The catch: the products were never shipped to their buyers, or counterfeit goods were presented as the real-deal. Sales on these sites were being used to finance fraudulent deals and as such the British police intervened with this operation, named Operation Papworth.

The danger that is presented during your search for a product is that your sense of judgement can be dimmed, and you can end up buying from illegal sites, according to Charlie McMurdie, the officer in charge of this operation. “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” he warned.
