Amazon to create 4,000+ permanent UK jobs

The global slowdown isn’t hitting every business. E-tail giant Amazon has announced it will create 4,000 new jobs in the UK this year. That will bring its total workforce to 75,000 making it one of Britain’s biggest private employers.

The new roles will be split between warehouse work at fulfilment centres to be opened in Wakefield and Knowsley, corporate roles in London and Manchester, and digital jobs in Edinburgh and Cambridge.

The company also claims to support an additional 250,000 jobs in the UK through more than 85,000 small businesses that sell their products through Amazon.

The latest numbers exclude other jobs created this year, although its latest hire numbers are sharply down on the past two years.

“Amazon has invested billions of pounds across the UK, enabling it to be one of the UK’s most significant job creators in recent years,” the company said in a statement, while John Boumphrey, Amazon UK country manager, added: “We’re continuing to invest in talent right across the UK, from apprentices in Swansea to data scientists in Edinburgh.”

Boumphrey  added: “Applicants recognise we are an employer that offers great development potential, and we are proud to have so many employees growing and taking the opportunity to learn new skills that will create paths to new jobs at Amazon and beyond.”

On Thursday, Amazon said that global shopping during its Prime Day event jumped 8.5% from last year to nearly $12 billion (£10.1 billion). The two-day event, which finished on Wednesday, saw members of its Prime loyalty programme buy more than 300 million items.
